Nuuruhine Lasse - Death Shadow Leaves - Episode 1
Hey all,
this is another anime that I've been working on with Hiyaku and Kamo over the Christmas holidays and I thought instead of e-mailing it why not put it up here.
I'm warning you now that this is going to be a 15+ and some content will be a little offbeat from my normal stuff.
Basically this is a very dark story but I won't ruin the plot (and plus I can't think how to write it without putting in spoilers).
So read and please let me know what you think of it - via comments, e-mail, talk or text I don't mind.
Anyway here ya go

Death Shadow Leaves
Episode 1
[Opening Theme song: has not been decided yet]
[An old priest gently lights candles from an old wax stick and smiles at the sound of children rushing in to hear another tale. The children are of a mixed gender and some appear to be different from humans but noticeably they are all dressed in either red, blue or brown]
[Another figure stands towards the back of the group, wrapped tightly in navy blue shrouds and constantly hushes the children. The old pries smiles and takes up his seat with great care and attention. He then picks up a large book and starts turning the pages.]
[At the sound the children quickly quiet down and watch him with wide eyes and firm attention. The priest smiles warmly and slips his glasses up his nose a little further]
Father Drygon: Well, it seems that we have our usual group of youngsters this week, Sister Rial, and some new faces. Maybe there is still a chance of a brighter future for our beliefs
Sister Rial: I agree Father, I leave them in your charge [she bows and leaves quietly. The children don’t make so much as a sound]
Father Drygon: Oh Sister, while I remember will you run to the kitchens and ask the cooks to prepare some light refreshments for us. I dread to think how long this story will take to be told to these youngsters.
[Sister Rial turns and nods her head, aware of how long it can take. She turns and leaves into the gardens where a third figure leans lightly against a tree. He is noticeably fully covered from head to toe in a dark red robe and part of his face is covered with a similarly covered piece of cloth]
[Sister Rial smiles and pauses next to him]
Sister Rial: Still hiding behind cloth, Brother Valde?
Brother Valde: [a little harshly] Yes, and before you start I prefer it this way
Sister Rial: [sighs] I understand, forgive my…
Brother Valde: [interrupting her] No, don’t apologies Sister…I’m sorry. I should know by now that you are only worried about me…[looks away from her]
Sister Rial: [gently takes hold of his arm] Walk with me to the kitchens, Brother? We have a lot of talking to do.
[His eyes – which are a dark green – seem to smile and slowly they disappear down the garden paths. The camera slowly raises to where a young girl and boy lean out of a window, watching the Brother and Sister walk away]
Father Drygon: Junney, Tasal, stop looking into business that is not your own. Come here this instant and join your class.
[The two slowly turn and run to Father Drygon who taps the stone floor in front of him with a long wooden stick]
Father Drygon: Now, my dear children, I shall tell you one of the stories that I have never told you before. This tale [he taps the book with loving reminiscence] is one of the oldest in our land and has been passed on through the generations from one scribe to the next with so much tender loving care that no one has dared to change any part of this one.
[Slowly and carefully he opens the book and the children become enraptured in the story before it has even begun to be told]
Father Drygon: It is said that in the early years of our land Hermoon, guarded as it then was by the second moon of Sunderwale, there was a small hidden forest and there grew one of the most mysterious times in recorded history.
[Slowly the scene fades out and becomes the forest of Outcasts and the village of Fallen Leaf. Many different shots of village life can be seen, as described by Father Drygon and slowly the images pan through the village]
Father Drygon: At that time, half-breeds were seen as despicable and deadly creatures who would do anything for gold and rights of land. They were described as monsters of un-natural birth and given cruel and horrible names. One day, the high council of the land decided that these monsters had to be done away with.
Killing them was out of the question, that would damn them all of the hell fires and the embrace of the Devil and his Mistress. So after many months of incarcerating men, women and children in foul hellholes of prisons and dungeons, someone came up with the idea of locking away these abominations from sight and sound.
So it was decreed that all half-breeds, no matter of what kind they were, were to be locked away in a dark and desolate forest and forbidden to leave on pain of death. Half elves, orcs, dwarfs and gargoyles were forced into the forest where it was hoped that they would either wipe each other out or simply die.
But what the council did not expect was for the community to thrive and proper. There were minor disagreements at first – in any given situation there would be – and things would have turned for the worse if it had not been for a chance encounter with tradesmen of the river.
These tradesmen were from neither kingdom of North nor South and lived by the trade from towns and villages along the waters edge. They did not judge those who were forced to live in a barren forest by what ran through their blood but by who they were as real people. With a little bit of help from fellow boaters and supplies from their trade the river traders helped them to set up a small selection of houses and taught them many survival tricks that they had learned from generations of living on the water.
After several years the small cluster of houses expanded and a village grew from the ashes of the scattered lives. Children were born and raised in the village of Fallen Leaf and supplies were gathered from the natural resources of the forest and trade came in plenty from the river.
This all went on with no interference from the outside world and although small trips would sometimes be made, those who lived in Fallen Leaf seldom left to visit the devilish lands outside of their protected forest.
Now my dear children, this history you must take in to understand the strange events that occurred from the village of Fallen Leaf. Many of the inhabitants never left the boarders of their forest but two did and they went on to become part of many legends.
[Father Drygon chuckles]
Father Drygon: Of course at this stage you will not recognize them well. But I shall tell you a little about them.
[As Father Drygon speaks, Dan appears from one of the houses a bag resting on his back. He is tall with long blond hair tied back with a red ribbon and dark green eyes and a medium build. He appears to have a certain aura about him that would cause many girls to fall in love with him at the slightest smile but a sadness/darkness lurks in his eyes. A necklace rests lightly around his neck, a red pendent standing heavily out against his black shirt, trousers and brown leather armor and bracers]
Father Drygon: The first I must tell you of goes by the name of Danshu Aralies, a twenty-year old half-elf with a bad attitude and demon powers of a darker kind. He was always described as an upstart and no good trouble casing lad in his youth and only changed after a fight with a girl he later called his best friend and lover.
Dan: [turning and yelling] Hey hurry up! I want to get going today!
Ai: [voice only] Okay, your impatient as ever I see
Father Drygon: Ai She Ruin. A young water Elementalist who is also a half-elf and nineteen-years old. She was calm and delicate, beautiful to behold and dangerous to cross. Many were surprised by her abilities with water as either of her parents had ever shown any signs of being able to manipulate water but she proved to be immensely strong and powerful in her chosen art.
[Ai appears from around a corner and is of average size with long black hair partly pulled back into a lop bun with the rest cascading down her back like a water fall. There is a slight blue shimmer to the black and her eyes are a stark bluish green. She is dressed plainly in a cream blue dress, which has small jewels on it but has no jewellery on]
Father Drygon: These two were like chalk and cheese, they appeared to have very little in common with each other yet were strong friends and companions throughout all their adventures and abilities.
[Dan and Ai are talking silently and slowly Father Drygon’s voice fades away to be replaced with the sounds of the market]
Dan: Well this is it, time to leave.
Ai: [nods slowly] Yes, it feels quite strange
Dan: You’re not having second thoughts about this are you?
Ai: [chuckles] No, of course not. All I’m saying is that it feels a little weird to be leaving
Dan: Good you had me worried there for a few seconds. Let’s go! [starts moving off]
Ai: [trying to stop herself chuckling] Dan, haven’t you forgotten something?
Dan: [turns around stupidly] No…what could I have for…agh!
[Soto appears from a nearby ledge and leaps at Dan. Soto is a small gray wolf cub with large eyes and is Ai’s companion. He proceeds to lick Dan’s face hurriedly and is obviously excited about something]
Dan: [struggling to get the gray fuzz ball off him] pfft, stupid mutt, hey c’mon get off me! Ai-chan get your bloody…agh!
Ai: [smiling and laughing] Hey Soto, come here baby
Soto: [hears Ai’s command and leaps off the unfortunate Dan to run around Ai’s feet] Yap yap woof!
Dan: [raising off the ground] Well at least your bringing the food, good to know that we won’t starve to death
Ai: [slaps Dan across the face] [evil voice] Don’t you even dare consider eating Soto!
Dan: [rubbing the side of his face] That hurt damit! [sees the dangerous glare from Ai] It was a joke anyway. Taku, no wonder you scare men off. Ai the man scarcer
Ai: Can’t say that the girls are particularly interested in you Danshu, not after what occurred with….
Dan: [leaping up fuming] Hey I already explained that there was a big misunderstanding over the whole situation
Ai: [walking off] Ah-ha, is that why she’s been avoiding you for the past month and a half?
Dan: Ai! Why won’t you believe me! I didn’t do anything to that girl…I only offered my…
Ai: [sighing] You might want to think carefully before you say the next bit Dan
Dan: [frantic] Look I’ve already explained a hundred times over, she just happened to be in the bath when I went round to see her and somehow or other she tripped and I went to catch her so that she would not hurt herself and there…was…n…n…nothing else
Ai: He protests too much, I rest my case
Dan: [still worried] Look, Ai nothing happened I swear no matter what she said…
Ai: Dan
Dan: …nothing happened between us…I mean okay she is pretty…
Ai: Dan
Dan:…and I have done said things before…
Ai: [a little persistent] Dan
Dan: But with her? No…that’s just
Ai: [rolls her eyes and turns and grabs him roughly by the collar and brings him to her eye level] Dan!
Dan: [rather scared] What?
Ai: You are…so easy to wind up [giggles and releases the rather confused Dan]
[Dan stands there for a few seconds, question marks bouncing around his head and a sweat drop realization appears]
Dan: You wound me up?
Ai: [nods before continuing on] Hai
Dan: [growls and launches himself at Ai] Lai, zan men zuo you xi!
[Ai turns and rushes off through the village, laughing and easily dodging the enraged Dan. A shop owner and two of the townsfolk watch them rush by]
Shop Owner: Lookit those two. Running around like a pair of idiots
Folk#1: Oh c’mon, let them have their fun. Don’t you remember what it was like to be in love when you were young?
Shop owner: Yes I do [his eyes go big and chibi like] Yes I do, he was the most beautiful and the most gorgeous boy in our class. I would sit and stare at him every day and wonder what kind of person he was but alas it was not to be. He turned against my proposals saying that he was straight but I could tell that he had desires for me as that one experience in the shower blocks…
Folk#1: Hey! I didn’t want your life story you sicko
Shop owner: But you asked if I remembered what it was like to be in love and I am remembering
Folk#1: Do you have to do it out loud though!
Shop owner: Yes, what’s ones memories if they remain hidden?
Folk#1: Does your mistress know about this you old goat!?
Shop owner: Oh yes she does, she’s him in disguise
Folk#1: [blinks and stares at him rather terrified] What?
Shop owner: He comes to me frequently when things get too much for him
Folk#1: Dare I ask who he is?
Shop owner: No big secret. He’s the Meyer
Folk#1: What! [faints]
Folk#2: I think you’re joke went a little far
Shop owner: Daft twat should stop being so gullible then. Still it is nice to see those two running around – has he asked her yet?
Folk#2: No, but I know he dreams of her every night
Shop owner: And I suppose that you can hear him?
Folk#2: Being his mother of course I can…I’m just going to miss him ever so slightly and Ai as well
Shop owner: [starting to clean things up] They’re leaving then?
Folk#2: Yes, today
Shop owner: [pulling out a bottle of wine] Well might as well toast to their health and good journey [passes her a glass]
Folk#2: Yes, that I hope
[Cut to break]
Dan: [holding Ai around the middle, obviously having caught her and breathing heavily] Give?
Ai: [laughing] No!
Dan: [starts tickling her] Give?
Ai: [in-between laughs] Alright, I give! Let me go!
[Dan quickly turns her around so that she is facing him. He smiles lightly and a faint glow is him his eyes]
Dan: Ai-chan, you forget the rules of the game
Ai: [blinks and smiles] Oh [giggles before placing a light peck on his lips] There you go…now let go of me!
Dan: [does so but obviously not entirely wanting to] Well that certainly got us out of there faster than I thought. Hey were is your fur ball friend?
Ai: [turns and looks around] We must’ve lost him when we went running off [whistles]
[Dan turns to say something when without warning a growling sound is heard]
Dan: [catching Ai’s arm] Stay close
Ai: [slightly confused] What’s wrong?
Dan: [taking things seriously] Creatures in the undergrowth
[The growling sound increases and something thumps along the forest floor. Both are wary, as dangerous creatures do exist in this forest. Dan turns around at a sound from behind them and Ai blinks twice]
Ai: Erm…Dan?
Dan: What?
Ai: Since when has Soto been a dangerous creature?
Dan: huh?
Ai: [points]
[Soto can be clearly seen through the gaps in the trees, dragging their packs along by the straps and growling rather pathetically as they are bigger than him]
Soto: grr
Ai: [smiles and goes towards Soto] Hey there baby, you been dragging these heavy packs all of this way for us?
Dan: [mutters] Stupid dog
Soto: [let’s go of the straps at hearing Ai’s voice and turns around. Seems to smile happily before flopping to the ground, exhausted]
[Ai scoops up Soto into her arms and cradles him like a baby. She talks to him saying that he’s a good boy etc and Soto doesn’t seem to mind at all]
Dan: [picks up the packs and gently watches Ai and Soto] [thoughts] How I wish I could be that mutt now [Fantasy image of Ai holding Dan’s head and saying that she loves him]
Ai: Dan?
Dan: [snaps himself out of it] What?
Ai: What’s up with you?
Dan: What do you mean? [Blushes]
Ai: [guessing] You’re not jealous cause Soto’s getting all of my attention are you?
Dan: No, I’m not
Ai: [walking off] [sing-song voice] Dan’s jealous
Dan: No I’m not!
Ai: Whatever Dan [lifts Soto in front of her face] You think Dan’s jealous of you, Soto?
Soto: [blinks and looks up at Dan. Appears to stick out his tongue at Dan before yapping happily at Ai]
Dan: [catching up] You’re strange you know that
Ai: Only cause you say I am
[They walk on in silence with the scenery changing around them until they reach the boarders]
Dan: [shielding his eyes from the sun] Wow, yet more forest to walk through. Still it’s pretty amazing
Ai: Yeah…[glances back, a softness about her eyes]
Dan: Don’t worry Ai-chan, the first step is always the worst step. Come on, [extends his hand] no going back
Ai: [turns and accepts it] None at all
[Slowly they step over the boarders and into the new world. Soto rushes ahead and the camera pans back to expose the countryside that they have entered]
Father Drygon: [voice only] They never did go back to Fallen Leaf and their adventures started that very same day…
